Killing the Call of the Wild

Sat Jul 17, 2004, 12:11 AM
Canada...
Founded on the FUR TRADE and still KILLING The Call of the Wild.

See our wolf center's banner here: [link]

Shooting, trapping and snaring of wolves is perfectly legal within most areas of Canada.

The Facts:

<> Except within or near some provincial parks in Canada, wolves can usually be hunted legally throughout the year.

<> In most areas there are no bag limits to the number of wolves that hunters and trappers can kill.

<> There are no provincial protection plans for wolves in Canada.

<> Snares are indiscriminate killers, taking dogs, coyotes and other species about as often as wolves.

<> Snares are not quick and painless killing devices. Snared wolves struggle to escape slow strangulation, often injuring -- even nearly decapitating -- themselves in the process.

<> In Ontario, nearly three-quarters of wolves killed are killed by neck snares. About 15 % are caught in equally cruel leghold traps while usually less than 20 % are shot.

<> There has never been a verified case of a healthy, wild, non-habituated wolf attacking a human. North America has no documented cases of healthy wild wolves killing a human.

<> Livestock depredation occurs mostly where wolf densities are low to non-existent and where there are coyotes and/or other predators (such as mountain lions or feral dogs) in the area.

<> There are no current figures or current and full studies being done on the wolf's true population and habitat viability within provinces in Canada.

<> Due to technology, hunter success rates are increasing. The more adult wolves that are trapped, shot and snared, the less chance of their wisdom and information being passed on to their packmates, especially pups, and the less chance of their packs surviving in the wild.

<> Wolves are legally killed by the thousands in Canada every year.
